MICHAEL NORTHAM

Since his earliest memories of family journeys through desert state of Utah, Michael Northam has been intimately and directly inspired by vast geographies, severe weather and and other impressive natural events and places. This life long fascination of the phenomena of perception and experience faced with intimidating scales (large or small) continues to the foundation of his work with sound and images.
His work is the continuation of more than 15 years active art-life-travel which has brought him to visit, work with, and learn from over 90 artists from over 50 locations in 25 countries.

Currently using specially prepared instruments such as the Magnetic Table Harp (a controllable magnetic resonance machine that acts simultaneously as a stringed instrument, a large contact microphone and a tone processor) as well as computer processing, prepared recordings (such as potatoes frying, wind moving through trees and walks through foliage) and a range of sounding objects--Michael explores the no-man's land between improvisation and acousmatic composition. A delicate position poised in search of the ever elusive morphological 'flow' where sound and action melt together and the eidetic triggering of sound as pure material transcends playing into the territory of 'sonic compost'—that which feeds our insatiable need to listen deeper.

He has worked as an editor and producer for the Swiss radio station DRS and has been working as a curator at the Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology of the Zurich University of the Arts since 2005. DEER HAPPY PLACE

When singer Romanie Marty calls out, the musicians hark and follow. This time’s follower is pianist Marcus Rager who accompanies Ms Marty with an E-Churchorgan. Putting together drama and sacredness the duo invented „Sacral Chanson“. Tearful and fierce, heartwarming and melancholic, irritating but still well-known. Ça vous donnera la chair de poule! Mais oui!

SIEBEN

Matt Howden about his project SIEBEN:

"I’ve developed SIEBEN so that I can play live without any backing. I use a loop pedal, a violin and my voice. I can start with a simple melody, add a bass part or two, some ‘drums’ by playing beats on various parts of the violin (‘kick’ behind the strings, ‘snare’ by slapping the body, and ‘shaker’ by scratching the pickup with my chin etc etc), harmonies and melodies over the top. Over this I can sing and play.

It’s been great doing this live, and I have really noticed that it has had much more effect on people in the audience. They can see the songs growing, right in front of them, and see how the layers of the song are made, as they start to build up."

STROTTER INST.

After more than ten years of making music with turntables, tapes and loops the swiss based musician, artist, performer and architect Christoph Hess started in 1998 the project Strotter Inst. to concentrate just on the manipulation of turntables not using any records or sounds made by someone or something else.

Live, Strotter Inst. is generating dense sound- and rhythmstructures by using five modified and manipulated lenco-turntables and various cut or scotched records. The music ranges from a low-fi rumble changing into concrete clicks and scrapes, followed by epic drones and multilayered broken beats to fall back into tricky bass-meditations. The anacronistic machineries have dual roles as objects and as instruments. The first live impact is as installations, then the sounds start to grab the listeners' attention. The auditive level surpasses the visual one. Therefore, the optical comprehension of how the sound is generated plays an important role. In spite or probably because of the analogue creation the structures produce a contemporary and accurate athmosphere in space and time. Strotter Inst. prefers to play in the middle of the audience. The installation is set up especially for each room. Except for the PA, Strotter Inst. brings along all the material he uses. The basic structures for every gig are noted. The set is adapted for each rooms conditions and depends upon the uncertain behaviour of the machines. So each live appearence becomes an acoustic original.

Happy New Year

Hello everybody,

Happy belated new year everyone! We hope you made it through safely and are ready for another cycle around our star.

We're sorry for the somewhat lengthy silence (even though we think silence is essential sometimes ;)

Due to various personal matters we had to take an extended break from any activities. So, to whomever is out here that cares: We are still here!

Actually, we are currently working on some new events this year but it's still too early to disclose any details yet. Only this much: We are looking forward to an exciting year 2012!

Stay tuned!
